Your rating gained is based on your team's Elo vs. the opposing team's Elo. Let's call you Team 1, and them Team 2.
Team 1 has a significantly higher Elo than Team 2. If Team 1 wins, they will gain little rating points. If Team 1 loses, they will lose a lot of rating points.
If Team 2 wins, they will gain a lot of rating points. If Team 2 loses, they will lose little rating points.
League of Legends also provides a rating-win boost for your first few games. Regardless of competitors' Elo, they will gain a significant amount of rating points upon a win during their first few ranked games.
